Services · Tree work
The mature trees behind your hedge line need different work at different points in their life. We do the five that come up on almost every Ramsgate garden, from harbour-side terraces to exposed cliff-top plots: pruning, crown thinning, crown raising, crown reduction and deadwooding. Thanet District Council TPO applications and Ramsgate Conservation Area section-211 notices handled where the tree is protected.
Selective removal of dead, diseased or structurally unsound parts, branches, buds, roots. The general work every mature Ramsgate garden tree needs on a cycle. Formative pruning on young trees; maintenance pruning on established ones. Coastal-exposure-aware.
Pruning detail & pricingSelective removal of live branches to reduce canopy density. Wind off the North Sea passes through instead of loading the tree as a sail; more light reaches the garden below. First choice on mature sycamores and Holm oaks that have gone dense on the East Cliff.
How thinning worksAlso called crown elevation. Removing lower branches for pedestrian, vehicle or building clearance, or to open a sightline across the harbour. The usual answer when a mature tree has been under-managed for a decade and is now leaning on the drive or the render.
When to raiseReducing overall height or spread by cutting back to laterals of a sensible size. Not topping, the wrong approach and we don't do it. Especially relevant on cliff-top plots where an oversized crown becomes a wind-sail in an easterly.
Reduction vs toppingRemoval of dead, dying or diseased branches from the canopy. Purely for safety and tree health, nothing structural changes. Standard annual maintenance on established garden trees, especially with ash dieback now widespread across Thanet.
Deadwooding detailHedge cutting, and height and width reduction, and planting, all the coastal hedge work you'd expect from a Ramsgate specialist, done to the same standard as the tree work.

Much of central Ramsgate sits inside one of Thanet District Council's conservation areas (Ramsgate, Ramsgate Royal Esplanade, Ramsgate Montefiore and Pegwell), so check your address on the council map. Any tree over 75mm in diameter at 1.5m needs six weeks' section-211 written notice to Thanet District Council before work. A tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs a full application with eight weeks' notice. We also flag the sensitive fringes, Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve on the south flank, the chalk-cliff SSSI backdrop, where extra care applies. We check both, file the paperwork, and quote knowing which window we're working in, no last-minute stop-work order on the day.
