Species we recommend for Ramsgate

Front-line, exposed seafront and cliff-top (direct salt spray)

• Elaeagnus × ebbingei — RHS AGM, tolerates exposed situations liable to salt winds, fragrant flowers late autumn, chalk-happy. Our default for the outer skin on West Cliff and East Cliff plots.
• Euonymus japonicus — glossy, wind-firm, full salt exposure, tolerates a hard clip.
• Olearia macrodonta / traversii — daisy-bush; the chalk-coast reliable, and one of the few things that will hold shape on a fully exposed line.
• Hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn) — native, nitrogen-fixing, ideal on the sandy Thanet Sand outcrops and cliff-tops. Suckers freely — a feature, not a bug, on a wild boundary; a nuisance on a formal one.
• Tamarix — feathery, deep-rooting into sand, very salt-hardy. Good behind a low retaining wall on the promenade side.
• Griselinia littoralis — RHS AGM, borderline front-line, happier with a touch of shelter. The default UK coastal hedge from Cornwall to Aberdeen.

Second-line (a metre or two of shelter available)

• Escallonia macrantha / 'Apple Blossom' — AGM, flowers most of summer, tidy clipped or informal.
• Pittosporum tenuifolium — takes clipping, gorgeous winter foliage, will handle exposure once established but hates a first-winter easterly.
• Rosa rugosa — front-line-capable as a low informal boundary; a good sea-facing choice where you want a low, thorny line rather than a formal hedge.

Sheltered walled Ramsgate garden (behind Regency terrace)

The palette opens up. Pittosporum, Escallonia and Griselinia clip cleanly. Box and yew viable off the wall footing (though box comes with the disease-load caveat below). Ceanothus and Myrtus flower well. Ilex crenata as a box replacement. Hornbeam and beech both fine in the shelter of a rear-garden wall.

Native mixed wildlife hedges (Pegwell, Sandwich flank, inland Thanet)

Roughly 50% hawthorn, 25% blackthorn, with field maple, hazel, dog rose, holly, guelder rose and sea buckthorn on the seaward side. Maps to what's already in the landscape between Pegwell Bay NNR and the Nethercourt fields. Plants in late autumn for spring establishment. Cuts in winter only (nesting law).

What we don't recommend

• New box — box blight and box tree caterpillar (first UK sighting was in Kent, 2007) are both established. New box plantings have a realistic 5-10 year window before the same problems return.
• Camellia or rhododendron hedges — the ericaceous species don't survive on Thanet's alkaline pH 7.5+ chalk topsoil. Don't let a mainland nursery sell you these; they'll be chlorotic within eighteen months.
• Beech on a windswept line — fine in a rear walled garden, scorches badly on an exposed frontage. Hornbeam is the safer choice for the same aesthetic.
• Hawthorn on the direct seafront — RHS lists it as an exposed-coast tree, not a front-line hedge. It survives with dieback on West Cliff; better set well back behind a salt-tolerant outer skin.
• Leylandii — fast and cheap, but you'll be reducing or removing it within 15 years. The cost saving up front is usually wiped out by the reduction job later.

The layered coastal hedge

On a genuinely exposed cliff-top or seafront plot, a single-species hedge is usually the wrong answer. What actually works is a two-layer boundary: a sacrificial outer skin of Tamarix, Hippophae or Olearia traversii that takes the salt hit and thins over time, and an inner ornamental line of Elaeagnus ebbingei or Griselinia planted once the outer skin is 1.5m+ tall. We plan these as a phased project, priced accordingly.

Planting practice

Bare-root for the November-to-March window (cheaper, establishes faster, looks bare for the first season). Container-grown for spring or summer planting (more expensive, can plant any month). Either way: dig a trench not a hole, mycorrhizal fungi at planting, water in heavily, mulch deep with bark, and water through the first two summers — Thanet is one of the driest and sunniest parts of the UK, and new hedges die from drought far more than from pest pressure.

Planted hedges are quoted including plants, planting, mulch and aftercare advice. Bare-root native mix is typically £25 – £40 per metre planted. Container-grown salt-tolerant species (Elaeagnus, Griselinia, Olearia) at usable size: £60 – £150 per metre planted. The big variable is plant size — we quote multiple options so you can balance budget against visible-from-day-one impact.
